Sean - video and stills with just one camera
I’m stoked about the new possibilities. There are still people who rant about the fact that they
have to pay for video features in a DSLR instead of realizing the potential it gives them.
When I bought the 5d II the main reason for getting it was to play around with video and use it
as well in order to express my vision and ideas. It simply is a great tool for a low price that
allows one very easily to move into another field.
If you’re a professional still thinking if you should also add video to your portfolio you’re
asking the question way too late. The question should be either “Why not?” and/or what’s my
next idea I could film.
Sure it opens up a whole new can of challenges, new software to be learned, new skills to be
acquired and a different way of thinking about storytelling. But isn’t that the fun part of
being an artist? To always be able to do something new and learn along the way?
I’m excited and you’ll see more moving images from me in the future while I still shoot stills.
It’s not a question of stills or video. It’s a question of delivering a vision.
This video was shot entirely on the 5D II with the 50/1.8 and no special tools, tricks or whatnot.
There’s a lot of gear out there already to help make the 5D a more versatile and better to use
video camera, but why not start with what you have?
And of course a still image ![]()

The Lounge: Your Behind-the-Scenes Videos
If you enjoy behind the scenes videos from photographers then this is the right post for you.
Heath Morton over at her blog asked people to send in links to videos so she can put them all
on your blog. Of course yours truly followed the call and there’s a great list of videos that
are great to watch. Check them all out.
Big thanks to Heather for posting them all. I enjoyed watching them.
The Lounge: Your Behind-the-Scenes Videos: “
I’m not going to recap our little discussion of last week re: BTS videos but I will encourage you to go back and read the posts and the subsequent comments if you haven’t already. Suffice it to say that they are generally considered a good thing by Art Buyers but don’t let producing them distract you from what you’re really here to accomplish.
Thanks to everyone who responded to my request to see your Behind-the-Scenes Videos- these run the gamut: from simple time-lapse to sophisticated marketing tool to instructional video to best-of compilation. In some cases they come complete with fancy editing and music (that’s been cleared for use I’m sure- ’cause if it wasn’t properly licensed that would be kinda hypocritical woudn’t it?).
Let’s do this in the order in which they were received:

Tony Fouhse has done a series of portraits of Crack addicts (which I discussed before here), it’s called USER and he had this to say about it:
I believe that it’s important to show BTS videos that aren’t all about big production and how many lights you use.
My photography is still very much about discovery and the magic of human connection. I believe that these two videos speak to that.

Ryan Schude’s final image will actually be showing as a large scale print in Toronto this October as part of the Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward 2009 exhibit.

This one is quite special because the BTS-video is part of the whole campaign here.

My BTS video, although it’s geared more towards the uninitiated client than towards professionals, but it was fun all the same. Enjoy.

We have have been doing behind the scenes videos for years. The majority of our client base is celebrity/music/entertainment and we just put together a behind the scenes video mix for our fall marketing:

This is a compilation of every RAW capture from a promo shoot for The Magical Exploding Boy by Dean Evans. None of the images have been retouched (obviously) therefore, you’re getting a glimpse into how I work with options for lighting, props, themes and talent during a shoot. Enjoy!

Check out our BTS here. The watershed moment for us was when the Canon 5dMarkII came out. We bought it as a back up camera for our standard kit, but all of a sudden we had an amazing video camera on every shoot to play around with. I think if we had to hire a cameraman with a pro level video camera, we never would have gotten around to doing BTS videos. And our clients love it! Now on about 25% of our jobs we are being paid extra to film and cut BTS videos.

We shot one recently on a shoot to not only of course show my fancy face but more or less to show other people how we do things and explain a little bit:

We starting posting them earlier this year & found it does help give the AD a little bit of insight of what it’s like to work with a photographer. We have a few on my site & we also post them on my blog.
Here’s a recent one that we still need to add a few credits to:
